After throwing a series of rooftop and alleyway parties over summer, on Friday the 27th of May, A LABEL CALLED SUCCESS (ALCS) is back at it again with RED BULL SOUND SELECT AT AUCKLAND’S WHAMMY BAR. With New York producer, DJ and beatboxer Flamingosis headlining and support from Hugo Jay, Spycc, L V J, Manuel Darquart (DJ) and A Band Called Success (DJ Set), it promises to be quite the night for lovers of house, disco, rap, beats, funk and tropical pop.
Best of all, the good people at Red Bull Sound Select will be supporting The New Zealand Music Foundation with a donation equal to the door takings in order to support the charity in our work changing lives through music.
“ALCS has a simple ethos to deliver music that feels good to people who want to listen,” says ALCS co-founder Connor Nestor. “These Sound Select shows are the perfect opportunity to link local artists making interesting music with ones we think are in a similar boat from abroad. It will be a night to dance, enjoy great sounding music being made in this wonderful city, and ultimately take it to the top with your boys from ALCS.”
Based in New Jersey, Flamingosis (named after a freestyle Frisbee move his father invented) draws influence from the wonky beats of Flying Lotus and J-Dilla and vintage funk and disco music. A producer, beatboxer and DJ, he creates engaging soul-soaked tracks and puts on an equally captivating live show, making his Great Hair album well worth a listen. “I’m very excited to play at the Red Bull Sound Select show next month,” Flamingosis says. “I’ve never been to that part of the world before. I’m curious to see what the music and culture is like. I’m also hyped on tasting the snacks.”
As well as Flamingosis’ New Zealand debut, this show signals the arrival of new Red Bull Sound Select roster member L V J; an easy bring in for ALCS. “LVJ is just doing his own thing which has been great to watch from afar,” says Connor. “He puts on a great show and is an all round entertainer. We’ve very pleased to have him on the roster.”
An all-rapping, all-producing double threat, L V J throws down romantic and unapologetic rhymes over dusty trunk-thumping beats. His releases Pizzaboy and The Shaka Tape recall the music of Madlib, Del The Funky Homosapien and Earl Sweatshirt, while still telling a story all his own. When he isn’t doing his thing solo, L V J can be found collaborating with The Grow Room, Kerosene Comic Book Collective and Tubertechno. “L V J is blessed to have joined Sound Select, as Sound Select will be blessed to have L V J,” he says.
On the night, L V J will be performing a stripped back Casiotone keyboard set surrounded by draped linen, mood lighting, and scented candles. Flamingosis and L V J will be joined by A Label Called Success regulars Hugo Jay, Spycc, Manuel Darquart and A Band Called Success (DJ set).
Since we last checked in with him, Onehunga rap artist SPYCC and his SWIDT team have gone from a Hawaiian shirt rocking crew to an official company. They’ve racked up over 20K youtube plays for their Kanye West homage ‘No More Parties In Stoneyhunga’ along the way. “It’s quite something to see him bring his words to life,” Connor says.
One of the main players within local underground music collective Inky Waves, HUGO JAY is a deep DJ and producer. He’s collaborated with the likes of Taste Nasa and Boycrush and certainly knows how to throw down. “You have to experience the music in the right environment to understand what Hugo Jay does,” Connor says. “Whammy is the perfect spot for him.”
The entertainment will be rounded out by performances from MANUEL DARQUART and A Band Called Success (DJ set). Lovers of Cosmic Disco and Euphoric House, Manuel Darquart’s Sean Whittaker and Louis Anderson-Rich have been working together as DJs, producers and live performers for several years. They’ve got all the right credentials and are on a roll after the recent release of their ‘Last Dance’ single via ALCS. A Band Called Success are ALCS’s in-house band, or in this case, in-house DJs. They’ll be playing their own tropical pop songs and plenty of quality disco, rap, beats and house songs to round out the evening.
Once again, ALCS and Red Bull Sound Select connect for another excursion, this time walking us through some serious basement party vibes from great local and international talent.
